M/Y Alyssa Nile Cruise
Overview
This all-inclusive 4-day Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor departs every Friday aboard the M/Y Alyssa Nile cruise, a modern 5-star river cruise ship designed by Swiss architect Pia Schmid — a unique blend of European, Egyptian, and Nubian style that makes her one of the most distinctive vessels on the river. Over four days, you visit the most remarkable ancient sites in Upper Egypt: the Island Temple of Philae, the twin-deity Temple of Kom Ombo, the magnificent Temple of Horus at Edfu, and the incomparable temples of Karnak and Luxor on the East Bank, followed by the Valley of the Kings, The Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon on the West Bank.
This is the best way to experience Upper Egypt. It is the journey that changes how people see ancient history.

Itinerary
A smooth 3-night journey from Aswan to Luxor combining iconic temples, scenic sailing, and the comfort of a 5-star floating hotel.
Board the M/Y Alyssa Nile cruise from 12:00 PM at Aswan. After settling into your cabin and a welcome lunch on board, your Egyptologist guide introduces the program ahead.
Afternoon — Philae Temple & Aswan High Dam
Your first excursion: the Temple of Isis at Philae. One of the most romantic ancient sites in Egypt, Philae is an island temple that was completely submerged by the original Aswan Dam, then painstakingly dismantled block by block and rebuilt on a higher island in one of the greatest archaeological rescue operations in history, completed in 1980. You reach it by motorboat across the still waters of the reservoir — an approach that makes the temple's island setting genuinely magical.
The Aswan High Dam — completed in 1971, one of the largest embankment dams in the world — follows, providing dramatic context for understanding Egypt's ancient and modern relationship with the Nile.
Evening on board
Piano Bar from 19:30. Dinner at 20:00. Overnight in Aswan.
Optional early departure at 02:00 AM: Abu Simbel — the two colossal temples of Ramesses II carved directly into the sandstone cliff above Lake Nasser in the 13th century BCE, and relocated in their entirety between 1964 and 1968 to save them from the rising waters behind the High Dam. Watching the four 20-metre statues of Ramesses II emerge from the darkness as the sun rises is one of the most extraordinary sights in the world. Guests who prefer to sleep enjoy breakfast on board as normal.
13:00 — Lunch on board. The M/Y Alyssa Nile cruise sails north to Kom Ombo
16:30 — Afternoon tea with live music on the Sun Deck as the Nile and its ancient banks pass at the pace they were always meant to be seen.
17:00 — Kom Ombo Temple. Perched on a bend in the Nile where the river turns dramatically, Kom Ombo is unique in Egyptian history — a completely symmetrical double temple, each half dedicated to a different deity. The right side belongs to Sobek, the crocodile god. The left to Haroeris, a form of Horus. Its walls contain what is believed to be the earliest known depiction of medical instruments in any ancient monument — surgical tools including forceps and scalpels, carved in stone relief over 2,000 years ago.
Evening: Cocktails and Piano Bar at 19:30. Dinner at 20:00. The famous Gallabiyah Party — guests dress in traditional Egyptian gallabiyah for a night of music, dancing, and celebration.
Overnight moored at Edfu.
05:30 — Edfu Temple. An early start, before the heat and before the crowds. The Temple of Horus at Edfu is the best-preserved ancient temple in Egypt — buried to its roof in desert sand and river silt for centuries, which is why its painted ceilings, carved reliefs, and towering pylon gateway survive in extraordinary condition. Walking through it, you understand immediately what all the partially-ruined temples of Egypt once looked like in their complete state.
Breakfast and lunch on board as the M/Y Alyssa Nile cruise sails north. The ship passes through the Esna Lock — a working 19th-century Nile lock that all cruise ships must navigate. As the ship waits, vendors in small boats come alongside below, throwing goods up to passengers on deck — an informal floating market that has been running alongside Nile cruises for generations. It is pure Egypt.
Late afternoon — arrival in Luxor
(subject to Esna Lock traffic). Your Egyptologist guide takes you to Karnak Temple — the largest religious complex ever built by human hands, covering 63 acres, constructed over 2,000 years by successive pharaohs, each trying to outdo the last. The scale is incomprehensible until you are standing in it.
Luxor Temple in the early evening — the elegant colonnade and obelisk-fronted facade of this magnificent riverside temple, illuminated as the light fades over the Nile.
Evening on board
Dinner at 20:00. Belly Dancer and Tanoura Whirling Dervish Show — one of the best-loved evenings of any Nile cruise.
Overnight in Luxor.
07:00 — Breakfast on board. 08:00 — Disembarkation.
Optional: Hot Air Balloon over Luxor at sunrise — a spectacular way to see the West Bank from above before your guide takes you through it on the ground.
West Bank — The Theban Necropolis. Your Egyptologist guide leads you through the Valley of the Kings — the royal burial ground of the New Kingdom pharaohs, where over 60 rock-cut tombs are carved into the limestone cliffs above the Nile. Your admission covers three tombs; your guide will recommend the finest based on which are open and what you most want to see. Tutankhamun's tomb requires a separate ticket and is always worth it.
Temple of Queen Hatshepsut — the extraordinary three-tiered mortuary temple carved into the natural cliff face of Deir el-Bahari, built by Egypt's most powerful female pharaoh and one of the finest examples of ancient Egyptian architecture anywhere.
Colossi of Memnon — the two immense seated statues of Amenhotep III that have guarded the entrance to the Theban Necropolis for over 3,300 years.
Transfer to Luxor Airport or Luxor train station for your onward journey.
THE SHIP
The M/Y Alyssa Nile cruise is not a standard Nile cruise ship. Launched in 2006 and built to the specifications of Germanischer Lloyd — one of the world’s most rigorous maritime classification bodies — she was designed by Swiss architect Pia Schmid, who created a unique interior blending European, Egyptian, and Nubian elements. The result is a vessel that feels like a boutique hotel on water: warm, distinctive, and genuinely beautiful.
The Alyssa accommodates a maximum of 132 guests across 66 cabins, giving her a more intimate feel than the larger Nile cruise ships. On the water, she is quiet, smooth, and elegant.

Italian Terrace (third deck) — alfresco dining with Nile views, serving Italian dishes and drinks

Know Before You Go
What to pack: Lightweight, breathable clothing for warm days on deck and at open-air sites. A light layer for cool evenings on the water and air-conditioned interiors. Comfortable walking shoes with good grip for uneven temple floors. A hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential at every time of year.
The Esna Lock experience: On Day 3, the ship passes through the Esna Lock — the only working lock on the navigable Nile. While the ship waits in the lock, vendors approach in small boats below and throw goods up to passengers on deck. It is pure, joyful Egypt. No pressure to buy — just enjoy the spectacle.
Abu Simbel early start: The departure is at 02:00 AM. Bring layers — the desert night is cold. The journey takes approximately 3 hours each way. The experience waiting at the end is worth every minute of lost sleep..

FAQs
Both routes visit the same temples. The Aswan to Luxor direction (this cruise) is generally considered the better choice for first-time visitors: you begin with the calm beauty of Aswan and the intimate Philae Temple, build through Kom Ombo and Edfu, and arrive at the vast drama of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings as the climax. It also means your most famous experiences come last, when you have the most context to appreciate them.
There are daily domestic flights from Cairo to Aswan Airport (approximately 1.5 hours — the most comfortable option). Egypt Air and Nile Air both operate this route daily.
The overnight sleeper train from Cairo is a classic Egyptian travel experience (approximately 12–14 hours, departing Giza Station).
Buses connect Hurghada to Aswan in approximately 5–6 hours.
From Luxor, there are frequent trains and buses (2.5–3 hours). Luxe Tours Egypt Team can arrange door-to-door transfers from any Egyptian city.
Unequivocally yes. Abu Simbel is one of the most awe-inspiring sites in Egypt — the four 20-metre statues of Ramesses II emerging from the sandstone cliff above Lake Nasser, approached by boat at sunrise, is an experience that stays with visitors for the rest of their lives. The 02:00 AM departure is early, but the reward is extraordinary. We strongly recommend adding this to your cruise.
For couples: the King Double Cabin — only 6 available, book early. For friends or family travelling together: the Twin Cabin. For the ultimate experience: the Deluxe Suite — 31 m², significantly more space, and the finest position on the ship.
Yes — and it is the most popular Egypt itinerary we offer. A typical combination is 2–3 nights in Cairo (Pyramids, Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo) followed by a flight to Aswan and the 4-day Nile cruise to Luxor. Luxe Tours Egypt team can design the complete package. Contact us to build your custom Egypt itinerary.
English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, and other European languages. Please specify your preferred language when booking.
Yes. The Nile cruise is an excellent family experience. Children are welcome from age 4. The Abu Simbel balloon trip requires a minimum age of 6. Children under 12 sharing a cabin with parents can often be accommodated at a reduced rate — contact us for details.
October through April is ideal — comfortable temperatures between 18–28°C. Summer (June–August) can reach 40°C+ in Upper Egypt, making temple visits very demanding. December and January are the most popular months; book at least 3 months in advance for peak season.
